Living in the plastic sea
In Almeria in the south of Spain, the hottest and driest region of Europe, lies the »mar del plastico«, the biggest concentration of greenhouses in the world and one of the main production places for cheap vegetable for the european market. It's an industry, that hugely relies on migrant workers from north-western Africa. Located at only 300 km from Gibraltar the place is a harbour for people crossing the mediterranean sea in search of a better life. But what they encounter is a harsh reality. Especially in the off-seasons there is hardly enough work for everyone. And with wages far below the standard, and no working contracts or residence permits, the immigrants live in constant insecurity.
